A new committee formed to oversee the Emirate’s urban planning sector

The Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan has been one of Dubai’s major strategy to plan for a sustainable urban city to live in. The plan which focuses on focuses on enhancing people’s happiness and quality of life and reinforcing Dubai as a global destination for citizens, residents, and visitors over the next 20 years, has been out there in full swing.

Now, with Plan 2040 in the running, a new committee has been implemented in Dubai for overseeing the emirate’s urban planning sector. The decision has come by as His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai's Crown Prince and Chairman of the Executive Council announced the formation of the new committee.

The committee will be chaired by Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Mattar Al Tayer, under the resolution ‘The Supreme Committee for Urban Planning’

The members of the committee comprises of the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, the Director-General of Dubai Municipality, the Director-General of Dubai Development Authority, the Director-General of Ports, Customs & Free Zone Corporation, the Director-General of Dubai Land Department, the CEO of RTA’s Strategy and Corporate Governance and the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Energy. Other members will include an urban planning expert and an economic expert that is yet to be named.

The resolution for the formation of the committee will include taking up roles and responsibilities for endorsing the vision and strategic objectives of the Urban Master Plan, under the supervision of the Chairman of The Executive Council and ensuring that the Urban Master Plan progresses according to deliverables and in line with government priorities and directives. The committee will also be responsible for ensuring the incorporation of the roles of the entities responsible for urban planning and directing the provision of support to facilitate coordination between various parties.

It will be responsible for resolving issues if any, or differences between concerned bodies in case the parties fail to reach an agreement. Also, the committee will propose policies, strategies and legislation to ensure the objectives of the Urban Master Plan are met, as well as empower concerned bodies in the emirate to carry out their respective tasks and roles.
