Former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has quit as the manager of Wales with immediate effect. Giggs has been on leave from his post since November 2020 and he awaits trial for domestic abuse in Manchester on August 8.

The 48-year-old is accused of coercive and controlling behavior toward his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville between August 2017 and November 2020.

Giggs pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In a statement, he said, "It has been an honor and a privilege to manage my country, but it is only right that the Wales FA, the coaching staff and the players prepare for the tournament with certainty, clarification and without speculation around the position of their head coach.

The team's interim boss Rob Page led Wales to their first World Cup appearance since 1958 and Giggs has now decided to give up his responsibility ahead of the international tournament.

Before his retirement in 2014, Giggs played a record 963 times for Manchester United. He also made 64 appearances for Wales before being appointed as the team's coach in January 2018.

Giggs qualified Wales for the most recent European Championship, which was postponed by a year to 2021 due to the pandemic. After that, the team was led by Page in that tournament.
