With targets to reduce emissions and promote smart growth, Emirati cities are using tech to encourage responsible consumption of resources in households. At the same time, the country is also focusing on increasing sustainability in industrial operations, by initiatives including a smelter that uses solar energy to manufacture eco-friendly aluminium for top firms like BMW.

UAE and its neighbours Saudi Arabia and Oman are also banking on smart meters to monitor electricity and water usage, to facilitate efficiency as they light up cities with renewable resources. Amid efforts of the Emirati regime to avoid excessive use, global tech brand Bosch has launched a product that combines AI and connected devices, to control power consumption at factories in the country.

The smart mechanism called Phantom Edge gathers information on consumption of energy for operations in all corners of a facility, down to the appliances, via sensors. This data is then processed using an algorithm, to provide real time updates on productivity, by creating a digital twin of the entire unit.

The virtual model provides a precise view of the equipment and operations, to take a call on maintenance, safety precautions and measures to scale up the output. All the information is relayed to a cloud-based platform, which in turn sends out regular alerts about state of the machinery, so that risks of a malfunction can be addressed in a timely manner.

Information free from human error makes Phantom Edge an ecosystem designed to assist managers with strategies, rather than a machine meant to replace them. Diverse features also make it useful for multiple industries including retail and small-scale manufacturing.

Bosch's product can also keep tabs on power consumption for smart homes in the UAE, where Dubai's water and electricity body has already achieved results with smart meters. Another private firm Grundfos has targeted the Emirati residential market with its smart pumps that reduce wastage of water by using AI to track and control pressure.
