The past few years have seen Dubai rise as a regional hub for sustainable growth and clean energy projects, with achievements including the world's largest solar park right outside the city. Apart from promoting responsible consumption and electric mobility among residents, Dubai has also managed to set up an industrial unit which completely uses clean energy to manufacture aluminium.

A robust tech infrastructure and connectivity has also made the popular tourist destination, an attractive market for e-commerce platforms from across the globe. Dubai's willingness to adopt modern tech and eco-friendly solutions made it a natural choice for online retail powerhouse Amazon, to set up its first fulfilment centre with an on-site solar plant in the Middle East.

The rooftop of this facility will have over 5500 photovoltaic cells, which will create enough electricity to meet 60% of the centre's power demands. The establishment will be connected to DEWA's grid, and is part of a larger plan to equip all Amazon fulfilment centres in the Middle East with similar tech.

Once this facility is set up successfully, Amazon plans to initiate similar projects in Saudi Arabia and Egypt by 2022.

This green push in the Middle East is part of the company's measures on a global scale, to meet its target of becoming a net-zero energy corporation, by cutting down carbon emissions till 2040.

With multiple projects including green hydrogen facilities and sustainable desalination plants, Dubai has made a reputation for its own clean energy initiatives. The city is also home to one of the world's largest units for recycling e-waste.

Apart from that, local bodies including DEWA and RTA have also actively adopted digital solutions to cut down emissions, use of paper and water consumption in their operations. The city's municipal corporation has not only deployed AI to control water distribution, but has also sent out a satellite to monitor pollution and climate change around Dubai.
