Contactless services seem on track to become the norm in the post-pandemic environment, since people are prioritising social distancing even after vaccinations in the UAE. In times when digital platforms offer completely touch-free services, malls and stores are employing innovations like scan-to-pay as well as shopping kiosks to attract consumers.

Facial recognition first made waves in the Emirates when Dubai used AI based facial scans for security on public transport, and now the technology has replaced passports at Dubai's airport as well. Taking a proactive approach towards the latest in contactless tech, Yas group has introduced facial recognition at its theme park in Abu Dhabi, to reassure visitors about safety from infections.

FacePass has been launched at Yas Island for now and is also set to be deployed at Ferrari World and Warner Bros World operated by the firm, since Emiratis may start leaving their homes for outdoor experiences. The service works via Yas Island's app which is linked to the ticketing system, and paves the way for touch-less and hassle free entry into the premises.

To create a complete socially distanced ecosystem, facial recognition also facilitates online payments at shops and restaurants inside the theme park. Apart from cutting down physical interactions at major attractions, the digital transformation will do away with queues at entry points to create a safe space for tourists.

In addition to FacePass, visitors staying at the Hilton in Yas Island will get wristbands to unlock their hotel rooms and also for entering the theme park.

This move by the developer comes after Dubai's airport recently started using Iris scans for entry and immigration procedures. The firm had made headlines in the Middle East last year, when it rolled out robots to enforce social distancing rules at Yas Mall.

Last month, UAE-based carrier Emirates Airlines had also started using biometrics for facilitating entry into airport lounge for its passengers.
