Mashable: Google has significantly increased its emphasis on security, striving to ensure user safety in all possible aspects. Recently, the company has focused on enhancing phone call security by introducing a caller identification feature akin to TrueCaller, which enables users to identify the person on the other end of the call.

Google has just added an new AI-powered feature that detects suspicious calls in real-time and sends you instant alerts

Furthermore, Google has collaborated with the Global Anti-Scam Alliance and the DNS Research Federation to explore innovative methods for combating online scams and threats. This initiative was unveiled during the Google I/O event, where the scam call detection feature was introduced.

This feature analyzes conversation patterns in real time to detect potential scam calls and provides immediate alerts—whether through audio, haptic feedback, or visual notifications—to inform users of possible scams. Utilizing Gemini Nano, Google's AI model, this feature operates entirely on-device to enhance privacy.

Additionally, Google has fortified its Google Play Protect feature. Traditionally, Play Protect scans applications for malware prior to installation; however, it will now continue to monitor apps post-installation for any hidden or dormant malware.

If any malware is identified, users will receive notifications and can take prompt action, although they have the option to dismiss the alert if they choose. To maintain user privacy, Google assures that all data collected for these features is processed on-device within a secure environment known as Private Compute Core.

Currently, the scam call detection feature is accessible to Pixel 6 users and above, but only for those participating in the beta program of the Phone by Google app.

Google intends to extend this feature to additional Android devices, including those from Nothing, Oppo, OnePlus, and others, in the upcoming months. Meanwhile, the enhanced Play Protect feature will soon be rolled out to other Android devices as well.
