Mashable: The U.A.E., along with other Islamic nations, relies on moon sighting to determine the beginning of Ramadan.

Astronomical calculations have unveiled that Ramadan 2024 is poised to commence on March 11. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, has affirmed this celestial alignment, emphasizing a unique occurrence—Ramadan embracing the winter season. This astronomical phenomenon is anticipated to persist until the transition to the autumn season in Ramadan 1453 AH in 2031.

The significance of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, resonates deeply as it symbolizes the period when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him). This sacred month is distinguished by acts of fasting, charity, and spiritual blessings, constituting one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. Adult Muslims observe fasting from dawn to dusk, embodying devotion and self-discipline.

In line with Islamic traditions, the U.A.E., alongside other Muslim nations, determines the commencement of Ramadan through moon sighting. The official announcements from the moon-sighting committee in Mecca, Islam's holiest city, guide the commencement of this holy month. The start of Ramadan hinges on the sighting of the new crescent moon and typically spans 29 or 30 days.

Embracing the spirit of Ramadan, the U.A.E. initiates traditions in mid-Shaaban with the joyous celebration of Hagg Al Layla. Emirati children, adorned in festive attire, engage in the delightful tradition of visiting neighbors to collect sweets and nuts while singing traditional songs. Daily fasting during Ramadan revolves around two main meals: Suhoor before sunrise and Iftar to break the fast at sunset, often initiated with dates and laban.

As the celestial clock ticks towards the awaited March 11, the upcoming Ramadan promises to be a season of spiritual reflection, community bonds, and cherished traditions that unite the faithful in the U.A.E. and people across the world.
