The coffin of priest Psamtik is one of the coloured wooden coffins that were recently discovered in the area of Saqqara.

With all the excitement brewing for Expo 2020 Dubai, and pavilions eager to showcase the best of their countries, Egypt’s pavilion is bringing an interesting artefact to display for the visitors of the event.

The Egyptian pavilion is displaying an ancient pharaoh’s coffin that has arrived just before the event. The coffin of the Pharoah belongs to priest Psamtik, the son of Pediosir from the ancient Egyptian civilization.

The coffin of priest Psamtik is one of the coloured wooden coffins that were recently discovered in the area of Saqqara, an Egyptian village in Giza Governorate by the archaeological mission of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and will be one of the centrepieces of the pavilion when Expo 2020 Dubai opens on October 1.

The coffin is decorated with a large necklace that has the head of a falcon and a mythical figure appearing to spread her wings, carrying two feathers of Maat, the goddess of truth and justice. The centre part of the coffin is decorated with religious incantations.

On the lower part of the coffin, two figures of Anubis, the god of the afterlife, appear above his cottage standing in front of the dead.

Apart from the casket of the priest, modern replicas of King Tutankhamun have also arrived to be displayed at Egypt’s pavilion. The collection of replicas includes his golden mask, his sarcophagus, the ‘Ka’ guardian statue of the king, a special festive chair as well as his golden throne.

King Tutankhamun was throned as a king when he was 9 and ruled the country as a pharaoh for 10 years until his death at the age of 19, around 1324BC. He was known for reversing the tumultuous religious reforms of his father, Pharaoh Akhenaten.

The ‘Ka’ from his collection meant spirit in ancient Egypt and the statue was a resting place for the person after death.

The Expo 2020 Dubai is set to begin on October 1 and will go on till March 31, 2022.
