The pandemic which has paralysed the world in the past year and a half, has also opened doors for innovation, with governments as well as individuals increasingly relying on tech. Following robots that used UV rays to sanitise airplanes and public spaces, the method was also adopted for wiping out bacteria from phones and other devices.

Since covid is highly infectious compared to other viruses, and can be spread even if two people touch the same surface, contactless services have been developed for almost every sector. As researchers work on enhancing protection against outbreaks, a group of students in Dubai have created a device that can be used as a replacement for conventional door handles, to lock covid away from institutions.

The invention which is basically a glass tube encased by titanium dioxide powder, depends on kinetic energy produced by the door, to trigger a reaction. The process facilitated using ultraviolet rays, causes an impact that breaks down the bacteria and sanitises the surface.

This simple gadget can have a significant impact, considering the threat posed by infected surfaces during the ongoing pandemic. Being low-cost, also makes the door handle a hassle-free and efficient alternative to run of the mill products in the market.

Along with the tool meant for sanitisation, the group of five has also created electronic temperature sensors, which are accompanied by an LED screen. This mechanism to scan people for symptoms, triggers an alarm that enables preemptive action against more infections.

Backed by the Dubai police department, the project will also be displayed at the global innovation challenge later this year. But the students aren't holding back, as they aim to use computer science skills on another project, with support from their teachers.

Similar innovations by common people in the UAE also include an air purifier that fights off viruses, developed by an Indian-origin electrician, based on knowhow collected online. Students in the country recently even created a robo-doc from recycled material, to protect their peers from covid.
