Saudi Arabia intends to construct an entire city along a single line that is just 200 meters wide and 100 miles long.

The project, dubbed "the Line," according to Saudi officials, is "the city of the future": a car-free metropolis that will run entirely on renewable energy and provide its citizens with clean air in a world that is becoming more and more polluted. The city is a component of Saudi Arabia's large-scale "Neom" project, which is being led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and is aimed at "sustainable regional development." He has been working to alter public opinions of a nation.

What had previously been an idea that even some of the project's planners had difficulty visualizing has now been given color through visual materials. The slickly produced movies depict a megacity with hanging gardens that somewhat mimic the Death Star from Star Wars. In addition to having access to other benefits like outdoor skiing facilities and a "high-speed train with an end-to-end travel of 20 minutes," residents will be able to access "all everyday requirements" within a five-minute walk. Officials claim that the plan would conserve land while also enhancing the environment. Residents are also in close proximity to the seashore, rock formations, and magnificent desert views.

On Monday, the Saudi press agency issued a video showcasing the most recent city plans. They depict a futuristic utopia that is unexpectedly stylish and green, with a rooftop garden and "equitable vistas" from every angle.

The 500-meter-high, 200-meter-wide building, a car-free, carbon-neutral bubble that will claim nearly 100% sustainability and a moderate, controlled microclimate, will use artificial intelligence at its core, according to the Saudis. Environmentalists have expressed skepticism in the past about the kingdom's environmental commitments, such as a promise to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2060.

The megacity's actual construction costs, completion date, and cost of real estate are all unknown at this time. But Saudi Arabia intends to raise somewhere around £200 billion for The Line and the Neom region.

A significant portion of this would be supported by the government, although funding from the market will also be sought out.

But it has already shown to be very divisive. Neom is really home to indigenous tribes that were forcibly evacuated for the project, despite marketing graphics that portray it as a barren desert, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

According to Metro, as the project grew bogged down in delays and significant overspending, the journal claimed last year that Neom staff was quitting in droves.
