TikTok Hits $15 billion in consumer spend, setting a new record

TikTok has surpassed $15 billion in total global consumer expenditure across both the iOS App Store and Google Play, reports Sensor Tower Store Intelligence.

TikTok has joined the ranks of Honor of Kings, a highly popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game developed by Tencent, as the only applications to achieve the remarkable milestone of $15 billion in consumer spending. It is likely to be some time before another app attains this level of revenue.

Additionally, two other mobile games, Monster Strike and Candy Crush Saga, have surpassed the $10 billion mark, while 15 other applications have exceeded $5 billion in earnings.

TikTok's supremacy in the non-gaming category is particularly notable, with YouTube and Tinder being the only other non-gaming apps in the top 10, each accumulating approximately $8 billion in total consumer expenditure across iOS and Google Play.

Approximately $7 billion, representing 47% of TikTok's total consumer expenditure, originated from China, where the platform is referred to as Douyin.

Earlier this year, the United States surpassed China to become TikTok's leading market in terms of consumer spending on iOS and Google Play. However, it is important to note that the figure for China pertains solely to iOS, as Google Play is not accessible in that region.

In total, the United States still lags behind China, with an estimated $3.2 billion in lifetime consumer spending, which constitutes 22% of the global total. Germany, Japan, and Saudi Arabia complete the top five markets, each contributing roughly 3%.

The short video application gained immense popularity after ByteDance acquired musical.ly in November 2017. It currently holds the fifth position in terms of all-time downloads, following only the four major applications from Meta: WhatsApp Messenger, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram.

TikTok's download figures encompass those from musical.ly prior to its integration with TikTok, as well as Douyin, the Chinese version of the app.
