UAE: Public, private sector employees to get a long weekend holiday for Islamic New Year 2023

UAE authorities have confirmed holidays for Islamic New Year

UAE has finally announced official holiday dates for Islamic New Year 2023.

The authorities in the United Arab Emirates have confirmed holidays for public as well as private sector employees on the occasion of the Islamic New Year.

On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, the Federal Authority of Human Resources (FAHR) took to its official Twitter account and announced the holiday date for public sector employees.

The authority revealed that those who work in the Federal Government will get a holiday on Friday, July 21, 2023, for Hijri New Year 1445.

As per Khaleej Times, the president of the Emirates Astronomy Society (ESA), Ibrahim Al Jarwan revealed that the new Hijri year that is Muharram Day 1 will likely fall on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

Meanwhile, residents in the United Arab Emirates who work in the private sector will get a paid Islamic New Year holiday.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) took to its Twitter account and revealed that all private sector employees will get an official paid holiday on Friday, July 21, 2023, on the occasion of the Hijri New Year or the Islamic New Year (1445H).

So, employees who work in the private sector will get a 3-day weekend from Friday, July 21, 2023, to Sunday, July 23, 2023. The residents will return to work on Monday, July 24, 2023. The same long weekend would also apply to federal employees.

The Hijri New Year or the Islamic New Year, marks the start of a new lunar calendar year. It is an important holiday for all Muslims and it also commemorates the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina.
