U.A.E. to celebrate 10th Flag Day on November 3; Here are some facts you must know

The annual Flag Day celebration by Emiratis and expatriates will mark its 10th year.

As people respond to the call made by the UAE Vice-President, hundreds of thousands of flags will be raised at once on November 3 at 11 a.m. The annual Flag Day celebration by Emiratis and expatriates will mark its 10th year.

On this day, flags are flown with pride at government buildings, private offices, residences, public squares, parks, and beaches.

Taking it to Twitter, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, reminded the residents about the day and said, "Our flag will remain raised.. the symbol of our pride and unity will remain... the banner of our pride, glory and sovereignty will remain high in the sky."

Here are some facts you must know about the national symbol:

1. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the country's founding father, raised the UAE flag for the first time on December 2, 1971.

2. Etihad Airways launched the UAE flag into orbit last year. The flag traveled at a speed of 5.5 meters per second and reached a height of 32,182 meters.

3. In 2017, Sharjah unfurled the world’s largest flag. The flag, which was 70 meters long and 35 meters wide, broke the Guinness World record for the largest flag hoisted on a fixed flagpole.

4. The UAE flag broke the record for the largest flag flown in free fall in 2019. The flag was 144.28 square meters in size. Dubai's Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, shared a video of skydivers breaking the record by jumping over the Palm Jumeirah.

5. Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, who was 19 at the time, designed the UAE flag in 1971 after reading an announcement for a competition to do so. Out of 1,030 designs, his flag was selected.

6. The national symbols of the UAE must be treated with the respect they deserve. Those found using the flag improperly or in a disrespectful manner face up to 25 years in prison and/or a Dh500,000 fine.

7. The material used to make the UAE flag must be robust, durable, and resistant to harsh weather. Polyester or heavy polyamide threads are the approved flag materials for use in official purposes in governmental institutions.

8. The flag is rectangular, with the length being twice as wide as the width.

9. Red represents the sacrifices made by those who built the union; green, growth, wealth, and cultural rebirth; white, charity contributions; and black, the strength of Emiratis and their rejection of injustice and extremism.

10. If there are multiple flagpoles flying at the entrance to a government building, the UAE flag is always flown highest and nearest to the entrance.
