WhatsApp has been experimenting with new features recently, such as a beta test of message reactions and tools that give users more control over recording audio messages.

For the most part, new tools aren't available to everyone because messaging and social platforms want to make sure they've ironed out all the kinks before making a significant app modification. That's the case with another new beta WhatsApp feature, the ability to share media files up to 2 GB in size.

According to WABetaInfo, the ability to send huge files is now only available to a small number of customers in South America. For Android beta versions 2.22.8.5, 2.22.8.6, and 2.22.8.7 as well as iOS, it's fully compatible and a significant improvement over WhatsApp's previous 100 MB file size limit. Following the successful testing of WhatsApp's higher file capacity, other messaging service providers may follow suit and increase their own file size restrictions.

In Gmail, for example, the maximum file size is 25 MB, but Twitter permits 1 GB. A lack of high-capacity media file transfer options means that users will have to discover workarounds, such as enlarging or compressing the media they send. WhatsApp's user base may grow if larger files can be sent over the app.

It's too early to tell if this function will be made available to more people or if it will last. However, it sounds like an even more helpful feature than the ability to respond to texts with a thumbs-up, heart, or weeping face emoji, so it's worth watching to see if it becomes accessible soon.
