According to WABetaInfo, the most recent beta version of WhatsApp for iPhone includes a notification regarding message alerts for some of these older devices. Specifically, an update scheduled for release in May 2025 will cease support for operating system versions earlier than iOS 15.1.
Currently, WhatsApp is compatible with iOS 12 and later versions. The notification states, “Update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp. WhatsApp will stop supporting this version of iOS after 5 May 2025. Please go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update to get the latest iOS version.” WhatsApp will no longer function on the following iPhone models:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
Additionally, WhatsApp has yet to release an official app for the iPad, aside from a beta version accessible to a limited number of users via TestFlight. In this context, the upcoming update will also discontinue support for the first-generation iPad Air, as well as the iPad mini 2 and 3.
The current beta version for iPad requires iPadOS 12 or later. Developers typically withdraw support for older iOS versions to concentrate on enhancing compatibility with the latest versions that incorporate new and advanced technologies. Moreover, Apple reports that only 9% of all iPhones are still operating on a version prior to iOS 16.
If you possess a newer iPhone or iPad that is still running outdated software, it is advisable to update its operating system to continue using WhatsApp. However, if you own one of the aforementioned devices, it may be necessary to purchase a new phone.
