Mashable: An Indian foreign ministry official offered details on the new Mideast corridor
In the wake of the 2023 G20 Summit which was held in the Indian capital of New Delhi, details on the new Mideast corridor have been revealed.
On Monday, it was revealed that the new India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) aka the Mideast corridor would include train links.
According to Khaleej Times, on Monday an official revealed the corridor will have ports, railways as well as better roads. It will also include power, gas grids, and an optical fiber network.
On Monday, September 11, 2023, an Indian foreign ministry official revealed that a new ports and railway corridor for the Middle East and South Asia will include train links to India.
A secretary in the Foreign Ministry, Ausaf Sayeed offered new details about the plan of the Mideast corridor which was unveiled over the weekend at the G20 summit in India’s Capital New Delhi.
The official confirmed that the corridor would also include trains to the South Asian nation and not just links by port. “India would be connected by railroads is the right interpretation,” he said at a media briefing, “rather than India building the railroads.”
The members of the multinational rail and ports deal include the United States, Saudi Arabia, India, the European Union, and the UAE. The major deal is being viewed as a response to China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative.
Later in the day, Khalid Al Falih, the Saudi Investment Minister revealed that the corridor would be “the equivalent of the Silk Route and Spice Road,” at an event in New Delhi. He also added that it will provide “greater energy connectivity, green materials and processed and finished goods,” which will help in rebalancing the global trade.
Meanwhile, when Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited New Delhi on Monday, the two nations also talked about the possibility of trading in local currencies as well as expediting the negotiations for a free trade agreement between the South Asian nation and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
It was also revealed that the two countries signed a total of eight agreements on Monday.
