The design installation Dodecalis Luminarium, which has travelled to 43 countries, has now arrived at Expo 2020 Dubai.

With various experiences at Expo 2020 Dubai, one of the unique experiences the mega event has brought is an immersive art installation that is catching everyone’s eyes.

With a large inflatable structure of three domes on the outside and an incandescent colourful maze on the inside, the new installation— Dodecalis Luminarium has opened at Festival Garden on Saturday.

The design installation has travelled to 43 countries and now the installation has been entertaining visitors are being to dodecahedron-inspired plastic shapes that look like stars and an octopus, which is a luminarium, a structure specifically designed to showcase light and colour.

Named after the dodecahedron, the 12-sided Platonic is a solid based on the pentagon and the various colours visitors see on the inside are created by light shining through the plastic from the outside, and changes according to the time of day and the weather.

Made by UK arts organisation Architects of Air’s Alan Parkinson, it comprises a series of tunnels and rooms, with different sections casting off different light showcases, from laser-green patterns on the domed ceiling to deep, dramatic reds.

Talking about the installation, Alan Parkinson, said, “I can say that its outside is deceptive, and visitors will often come out remarking that it seems so much bigger inside and that they could never have anticipated how bright the colours are.”

While the playful exterior and labyrinthine interior has been appealing to people of all ages, the installation at Expo 2020 Dubai has a reduced capacity, accepting 56 guests at a time. The entry to the Dodecalis Luminarium is free.
