Making it a safe space for the cycling enthusiasts of Abu Dhabi, the lawmakers have now issued a permit system for the riders wherein they can secure permission from the authorities.
Cycling groups with the help of permission can now long-distance rides on Abu Dhabi’s main roads and highways. The new permit will be applicable to groups of amateur cyclists traveling on roads with a speed limit exceeding 80 kilometers an hour.
While groups need to take permission to do this, individual cyclists will not require a license. However, they have been urged to stay off busy roads in general to avoid any mishaps.
In association with the Integrated Transport Centre, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and Abu Dhabi Cycling Club, the permit system has been introduced by Abu Dhabi Police.
The ones wishing to ride faster can submit their applications using the Abu Dhabi Police website within a period of no less than 48 hours from the date of using the permit.
Additional to the permit, the vehicle must be equipped with hazard lights and should adhere to security and safety requirements such as placing bicycles in the places designated for them without impacting or obstructing the traffic.
The aim of the permit is to allow cycling groups and clubs to ride fast on the city’s roads during quiet periods, with keeping all the safety guidelines in place.
The cycling scene in the capital has become competitive with more and more people taking up the activity in large numbers. This has called for groups going on regular rides. In fact, many semi-professional groups now even use support vehicles for long and demanding rides.
With the increasing number of cycling enthusiasts in the region along with the ever-growing traffic, the police have urged both drivers and cyclists to be careful and said that riders should stick to cycle tracks and never be on the same street with cars.
The police officials also shared that the measures were introduced to ensure cyclists’ and motorists’ safety throughout the emirate.
