Mashable: Meanwhile, Musk is on the lookout for a new Twitter CEO.
Tech, auto, and space billionaire Elon Musk currently owns six businesses. The billionaire's most recent business purchase was the microblogging platform Twitter. In October of this year, Musk paid $44 billion to acquire Twitter. Since then, he has implemented a number of challenging adjustments in an effort to turn Twitter into a viable business, called "Twitter 2.0." Musk has stated his openness to acquiring another US-based startup in order to take on corporate media while he is still in the process of rebuilding Twitter.
Substack is a US-based online platform that provides publishing, payment, analytics, and design infrastructure to enable subscription newsletters; in his most recent comments to a Twitter user, Musk indicated that he would be interested in purchasing the company. The website has been around since 2017, and it allows writers to provide digital newsletters to readers.
In 2017, Chris Best, co-founder of Kik Messenger, Jairaj Sethi, a developer, and Hamish McKenzie, a former tech reporter, came together to start Substack. U.S.-based web service that facilitates newsletter subscriptions through publishing, billing, analytics, and aesthetic design.
After the user inquired if it made sense for Twitter to acquire Substake and integrate the two sites, the thought occurred to Musk. "I'm open to the idea," Musk responded. The user tweeted, "Twitter plus Substack creates instantly massive competition for obsolete legacy corporate media."
Musk's statement follows the lackluster coverage "Twitter Files" received from traditional outlets after being exposed by journalists working for Musk.
Following his $44 billion purchase of Twitter, the likelihood of Musk purchasing Substack is low at the moment. Musk is the current owner of Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, Neuralink, Twitter, and OpenAI, for a total of nearly six businesses. He started SpaceX, where he is currently CEO and chief engineer, Tesla, where he is CEO and product architect, Twitter, where he is currently owner and CEO, The Boring Company, Neuralink, and OpenAI, where he is currently a co-founder.
Meanwhile, Musk is on the lookout for a new Twitter CEO despite his unwillingness to place significant authority in that person's hands. Even if he's looking for a new CEO for Twitter, he'll still be in control of the tech side.
