Mega projects for generating solar energy and desalination of water are designed to ensure ample supply of these resources for the UAE, with more innovation in the pipeline. Local bodies have also roped in everything from satellites to smart tech for ensuring responsible consumption of power and natural wealth, since sustainable growth has become a priority.

But awareness about these issues and active participation of residents remains crucial for preventing wastage, and smart metres alongside AI to detect leaks, are allowing them to play their part. Since smartphone apps have become a tool for almost all daily tasks from shopping to work and recreation, the Emirati energy department has launched a platform to spread knowhow about saving water and electricity.

In addition to the assistance they get from an efficiency adviser on the app, residents can also connect with experts on video call, and the mobile camera will facilitate a home inspection. Users can then gain insights and tips from professionals in the field, and even receive help for installing innovative gadgets.

LED bulbs, water measurement bags and low-flow showerheads will be provided to users as part of a do it yourself kit, for cutting down water and energy consumption. Advise provided by the assigned support staff will also be aimed at helping households for saving money on bills.

Although organisations like DEWA have been helping people with water conservation via updates about possible leakages, this comprehensive app is a fresh offering in the country. Brands in the region have also been marketing smart pumps to facilitate the monitoring and distribution of water in a household.

Methods like modified sand are also being used to turn pavements into surfaces that absorb and store water. The moves for maintaining a steady supply of water in the region, can also boost agricultural production.

To top it all, UAE's tech hub Dubai has finished installing over two million smart metres for regulating the usage of power and water.
