As people are eager for Expo City to open in October of this year, many are already planning on pavilions they would like to visit. Originally known as District 2020, it was announced in June that the city would be renamed Expo City.

While we wait for the official opening, here are four important things to know about the new Expo City.

Green Zone

There will be no cars in Expo City. Expo Metropolis will strive to provide multiple means of 'clean' transportation, contributing to Dubai's goal of becoming a more economical and sustainable city. There will be a lot of options for those living and working in the new city, including e-scooters, e-bikes, buggies, and pedestrianised sections.

Expo City will be free of single-use plastics as Dubai becomes more eco-friendly and taxes for plastic bags are implemented. Siemans will provide cloud technology support at Expo City through Mindsphere. This technology will enable smart metering of energy use to improve the efficiency of on-site power, light, water, and climate control systems.

Free Zone

Expo City, like DIFC, will be designated as a free-zone area in Dubai. This means that the new city will allow foreign investors and expats to fully own enterprises. The UAE currently has around 40 free zones.

Some Expo 2020 attractions will remain

Some of the Expo 2020 attractions that we all know and love will remain when the area transforms into Expo City. Several country pavilions and Expo 2020 pavilions will remain, such as the UAE Pavilion, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion, the Woman’s Pavilion, the Vision Pavilion, and more will remain at Expo City Dubai.

Other pavilions that will remain open for visitors are modified versions of the Luxembourg, Australia, Pakistan, India, Morocco, and Egypt pavilions. The Opportunity Pavilion will be refurbished into the Expo 2020 Dubai Museum. The famous Al Wasl Plaza, Garden in the Sky observation tower, and Surreal Water Feature will all remain accessible in the new city.

A new exhibition, named 'Stories of Nations', will be built alongside other different additions.

Accessibility

Expo City will remain accessible through Dubai Metro. The Expo 2020 station will continue to operate for those who will be living and working in the new city. The site will be accessible by car, even if it will be car-free on the inside.

Expo City will be a centre for business, entrepreneurship, and a residential neighbourhood, digital accessibility will be critical. Expo City will be the world's largest space to be completely covered by a 5G-enabled network.
