Google TV app will be the only place where users can make purchases or rent content.

Google will retire Play Movies & TV in October 2020 in favor of the Google TV app, which will be available for iOS and Android devices. Play Movies & TV never really took off despite being pre-installed on most Android devices. It largely served as a gateway to the Play Store for purchasing or renting new content.

Now, Google has stated that the "Movies & TV" section of Google Play on your Android smartphone will no longer be available for download. Instead, the Google TV app will be the only place where users can make purchases or rent content.

On or after May 2022, the Play Store's "Movies & TV" page will no longer be available on Android phones, forcing you to utilize the Google TV app to stream items you've previously purchased. In addition, you can continue to use Play credit and gift cards to rent and buy items on Google TV without any changes to your existing library or wishlist. Refund requests for previously purchased media content and family sharing are unaffected as well.

While the Play Movies & TV app primarily serves as a marketplace with an integrated video player, Google TV gives you access to content suggestions and deep linkages to a variety of online broadcasting services. The app comes preloaded on Android devices and is available in almost all parts of the world except a few countries. To make your life easier, it includes a virtual control for your Android TV or Chromecast.

There is no mention of whether or not the Movies section will be removed from the Play Store website in Google's announcement. It's important to note, however, that the Play Store will no longer serve as a one-stop shop for acquiring Google's entire catalog of digital material. Furthermore, there is no Google TV app for iOS at this time. It appears that Google's Play Movies & TV app will continue to be used by iPhone and iPad users to purchase and rent content from the company.

The removal of the Movies section of the Google Play Store is hardly shocking. In recent years, Google has begun removing the Play Movies & TV name from its search results, one step at a time. Play Movies and TV were changed to Google TV in 2020 as part of this process. According to AndroidPolice ,Roku and other smart TV platforms' dedicated Play Movies & TV apps were discontinued last year.
