Most of us who've owned smartphones with physical Google Assistant trigger never really used it to summon the voice assistant. We either remapped it to launch another app, if that was possible or simply pretended like the button never existed.
Well, that's not stopping Google from attempting to give you more triggers to call on its voice assistant. Things aren't official yet, but those over at XDADevelopers have dived into code within the latest version of the Google app (version number 12.18.6.29) and noticed a few interesting bits of information.
It seems like Google will now let you trigger the assistant with the long press of the power button. There's no clarity as to when the feature will show up on our Android devices, but when it does, we do see a hint that Google will allow us to enable/disable the feature from somewhere in settings.
The XDA report notes that on phones running Android 11 or below, the new setting will show up under 'Apps and Notification' settings and for phones running Android 12, it will be accessible from the Apps section in the settings menu.
That said this isn't entirely something new for Android users. The likes of Samsung have had a similar feature on their Galaxy devices for years, so this could simply be Google's way of balancing the act and making its assistant more accessible, rolled into one.
The code also revealed that Google may be planning to add some more features like making payments easier while your phone is connected to Android Auto or when it’s unlocked.
