This fund will be open to the great majority of US developers who have made money through Google Play, according to a blog post by Google.

Following a legal battle with Android app developers over the revenue they generate developing apps and encouraging users to make in-app purchases, Google has agreed to pay $90 million, according to court filings.

In a report, according to the app developers, Google has leveraged agreements with smartphone makers, technical impediments, and revenue sharing agreements to effectively restrict the app ecosystem and shunt most payments through its Google Play billing system, which has a default service fee of 30 percent.

App developers who make less than $2 million a year in yearly income from 2016 to 2021 will receive $90 million from Google as part of the proposed settlement.

This fund will be open to the great majority of US developers who have made money through Google Play, according to a blog post by Google.

For the first $1 million in Google Play Store sales each year, Google indicated it will charge developers a 15% commission. From the year 2021 onwards, it has been doing so.

The proposed settlement must be approved by the court. According to the plaintiffs' attorney, Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, about 48,000 app developers were eligible to apply for the $90 million funds. The minimum award is $250.

Legislation requiring Google and Apple to allow sideloading, or the practice of downloading software without using an app store, is currently being considered in Congress in the US. Sideloading is already supported by Google, according to the company. It would also prevent Google and Apple from requiring app developers to utilize their payment systems.
