A surplus of live cultural events took over at the Al Wasl Plaza at the Expo 2020 Dubai as Lao People’s Democratic Republic celebrated its National Day at the Expo, on Wednesday.

Showcasing traditional Laos music and culture through live performances, the event was held at Al Wasl Square, in addition to three different performances in the three thematic areas of Expo 2020 Dubai— the sea stage, the sun stage and the land stage.

The celebration included the official flag-raising ceremony, followed by live events that included music pieces using a variety of traditional Laos instruments like Khane, Ka Chab Pi, and Wose, each of which were utilised for performances by musicians Ou Dai Seng Da Vong. The two songs ‘Peace of Bird’ and ‘Kub Toom Luang Prabang’ was also performed by a solo singer.

Spectators were also treated to traditional Laos dance performances featuring ‘Tai Sum Silk’ and cotton weaves, which conveyed the lives of the people in North Huafan Province, famous for its silk and cotton production.

Talking at the event, Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, Executive Director of the Office of the Commissioner-General of Expo 2020 Dubai said, “The Laos Pavilion is a living testimony to the depth of the 1,000-year-old traditions and agricultural techniques that were established by local people in Laos with the aim of improving their living conditions and increasing economic growth. The exhibition invites us to explore Laos’ socio-economic development achievements through the evolvement of its agricultural, commercial and tourism sectors, with a particular focus on the growth of the Lao silk and cotton industry and the role those local women have played in its development.”

With a young, educated population, thriving innovations and a vibrant cultural scene, the Laos Pavilion present a country filled with a deep respect for its past while it looks firmly into the future.
