Mashable: The Qatar World Cup will be the last of Messi’s career
The Argentina Captain has said that he is counting the days until the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.
Lionel Messi is set to play in his fifth World Cup next month.
The Argentina Captain has admitted that he feels nervous ahead of his last World Cup appearance.
The 35-year-old Argentine professional footballer will play his fifth World Cup in Qatar which is scheduled to begin on November 20, 2022. He is still seeking his first title at the showpiece tournament.
As per ESPN, in an interview with Star Plus, Messi said, “There’s some anxiety and nerves at the same time. It is the last one.”
Despite feeling nervous, Lionel Messi believes that his team has a good chance of winning the tournament.
The team will arrive in Qatar after winning the 2021 Copa America final against hosts Brazil. The player also admitted that the win was a turning point for his team after many near misses.
Talking about the World Cup, he said, “In a World Cup, anything can happen. All the matches are very tough.” He added, “The favorites don’t always end up winning. I don't know if we’re the favorites, but Argentina is always a candidate because of history.”
The 35-year-old player confirmed that this World Cup would be his last. He added that he feels good physically after a better pre-season this year than last year when he joined PSG from Barcelona.
Messi added, “I have been playing with the national team for a long time now. There have been spectacular moments, like in 2014, 2015, and 2016, but we didn’t win and were criticised for not being champions.”
The 2022 Qatar World Cup is scheduled to begin on November 20 and end on December 18.
Argentina will open the Qatar tournament on November 22 against Saudi Arabia in Group C before playing against Mexico and Poland.
