Mashable: Sharjah Police puts a stop to New Year’s Eve celebrations to express solidarity with the people of Gaza

With just a few days left until we welcome 2024, Sharjah Police has put a ban on New Year’s Eve celebrations as well as firework displays.

On Tuesday, December 26, 2023, Sharjah Police announced a ban on celebrations and firework displays on New Year’s Eve to express solidarity with the people of the war-torn Gaza.

According to the National News, the authority appealed for cooperation and asked all institutions and individuals to follow the directive. Sharjah Police also added that legal action will be taken against those who violate the given instructions.

Sharjah Police took to its official social media account and announced the decision. “It is certain that human solidarity is a well-established idea of the Emirate of Sharjah,” the Sharjah Police wrote on Facebook.

“The General Command of Sharjah Police has announced a ban on all celebrations and fireworks displays on New Year's Eve 2024,” the announcement read, “in a sincere expression of solidarity and humanitarian cooperation with brothers and sisters in the Gaza Strip.”

Spectacular fireworks with massive celebrations including drone shows are a major part of New Year's Eve celebrations across the United Arab Emirates. It's one of the most awaited festivities that the UAE residents look forward to.

Over 20,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war broke out on October 7, 2023, in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the United Arab Emirates has made repeated calls and demanded a permanent ceasefire to protect civilian lives in Gaza. The Emirates has also sent humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine.
