Mashable: The primary and cover screens of Vivo's first foldable smartphone, the X Fold, are said to use an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor.

Samsung Electronics will not use in-display fingerprint sensors in its forthcoming foldable smartphone models. For the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, Samsung contemplated using in-display fingerprint identification technology but ultimately opted against it. In the third quarter of this year, the two foldable variants will be released. In-display fingerprint sensors have yet to be deployed in any of the company's smartphone models.

Based on a patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization, foreign media outlets and industry experts speculated that Samsung will use an in-display fingerprint scanner in its upcoming foldable devices (WIPO). When a device screen is folded or unfolded, the patent docs reveal a form that can employ fingerprint recognition.

When the smartphone is folded, a fingerprint sensor is located in the middle of the bottom, and when the device is unfolded, the additional fingerprint sensor is located to the left of the bottom. The two sensors are connected to the main screen through a printed circuit board (PCB) flanked by the two sensors. Biometric authentication can be accomplished when a fingerprint is identified through the outside cover display while the device is folded.

The fourth-generation foldable models, like their predecessors, will be opened using a fingerprint identification module integrated with the physical power button on the foldable models' side when they are folded.

According to reports, Samsung Electronics has decided to keep the current unlocking method because the user experience (UX) should unlock foldable devices by having them recognize fingerprints naturally while opening their screens due to structural characteristics rather than technological limitations.

Samsung Electronics earlier used the fact that users may utilize Samsung Pay services with the Galaxy Z Flip 3's cover display without having to open it as a marketing highlight by installing a fingerprint sensor on the side of the device. The primary and cover screens of Vivo's first foldable smartphone, the X Fold, are said to use an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. The X Fold is set to be introduced on April 11.
