Sharjah Police has launched a mountain rescue team, in order to deal with reports and accidents that occur during mountain climbing.
The mountainous terrains of the UAE can get difficult at times, especially when hikers set out on adventures, unexpected incidents can happen.
Thus, to come to the aid of hikers, Sharjah Police has launched a mountain rescue team, in order to deal with reports and accidents that occur during mountain climbing.
Comprising of 20 officers, the task force is dedicated to providing swift assistance in a range of hiking incidents, from missing person reports to helping those stranded due to fatigue.
The unit which is now operational will be an essential resource as the return of cooler weather encourages more people to explore mountainous areas in the eastern region of Sharjah.
“The launch followed several meetings with relevant departments so as to identify all forms of incidents that happen during mountain hiking,” said Col Ali Al Kai Al Hamoudi, director of the Eastern Region Police Department at Sharjah Police.
Hikers or explorers can report hiking incidents by calling the emergency 999 number or via WhatsApp, on 092370000.
Al-Hamoudi also pointed out that every group practising mountaineering must inform the operating room of the number of climbers so that all measures are taken to ensure their arrival and safety.
Many a time, some people go out without informing their relatives about their exit, or without telling them when and how much time they will spend. These, sometimes lead to unwanted incidents as it is dangerous to go to open places alone without escorts.
The unit, will thus, bring more support to the paramedics and rescuers at Sharjah Police who have always responded to such reports with efficiency.
Al-Hamoudi also pointed out that hikers should be well prepared and follow set routes. “The more prepared you are, the more likely you are to have a good time and stay safe,” he said, adding, “We advise that the group inform the police’s operations room so that we ensure they get to their destination safely.”
Hikers should pack essentials like water, snacks and a first aid kit and should make sure they stay on trial to avoid losing mobile and internet connections.
