There are several unforeseen scenarios that can trigger concern among motorists, which include running out of fuel, getting lost on the road and even losing their keys. Connected vehicles and gadgets designed in the past few years have safeguarded people against many of these with common tech like GPS as well as more sophisticated services.
In its foray towards the age of smart cars, Israel has started developing infrastructure to protect vehicles against cyber threats, and private firms have also zoomed in to steer wagons away from hackers. But in a bid to tackle a problem car-owners may face in everyday life, an Israeli tech firm has come up with digital access to make sure motorists don't have to worry about losing their keys.
Created by safety device maker Cobra, an online app allows motorists to use smartphones as keys, by connecting to their vehicles via Bluetooth. The Mobile-Key solution lets people unlock doors, open the trunk and start the engine remotely, simply by tapping their handset.
The digital platform is equipped by an electronic device installed under the dashboard, which enables users to control a vehicle. The mechanism can be integrated into the wagon in an hour with help from a technician.
Such digital keys aren't entirely new, since tech-savvy high-end models already come with their own versions of the tool. But the offering by Cobra will seamlessly upgrade existing cars already on the road with this simple yet convenient system.
Motorists can gain easy access to cars on their fingertips, even as tech titans like Google and Apple are still developing virtual keys for their upcoming smart cars.
But these products also increase the importance of cybersecurity measures, since hackers can pose a serious threat if they hijack vehicles.
Digital keys as a solution are among innovations meant to make drivers feel more secure, including sensors that can alert authorities about accidents.
