The Insult, Ziad Doueri’s tense Beirut-set courtroom thriller, has become the first Lebanese film to nominated in the Oscars’ foreign-language category, being named to the final shortlist of five, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The film, which picked up the best actor award for Kamel El Basha in Venice, was the 14th film to be submitted by Lebanon since 1978 (and Doueri’s second, after his 1998 debut West Beirut).
The film revolves around an insult blown out of proportions that finds Toni, a Lebanese Christian, and Yasser, a Palestinian refugee, in court. From secret wounds to traumatic revelations, the media circus surrounding the case puts Lebanon through a social explosion, forcing Toni and Yasser to reconsider their lives and prejudices.
The 90th Academy Award ceremony will air on Sunday, March 4, 2018.
