Apple’s OLED displays are rumored to have variable refresh rates for added efficiency.

OLED displays are pretty standard for today's smartphones. However, the technology has yet to gain widespread acceptance in the laptop and tablet markets. A few brands, such as Asus, have begun to offer laptops with OLED screens in the mid-tier segment. The benefit of OLED is lower power use, high color fieldity with true blacks, and less space consumption, but the technology is still expensive for use in larger displays.

New reports from Display Supply Chain Consultants’ Ross Young claim that Apple plans to release MacBook and iPad versions with upgraded OLED panels. In 2024, these displays are expected to hit the market.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, either a new MacBook line or upgrades to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are on the horizon for Apple. For this year's upgrade of the MacBook Air, a new MacBook Pro or a new MacBook category are more plausible. However, by the year 2024, this knowledge is likely to have changed.

Until then, display technology known as "tandem stack" may be used in the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with OLED panels, which should improve panel lifetime while cutting power usage by 30%. Plus, Apple’s OLED displays are rumored to have variable refresh rates for added efficiency. Apple’s 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros are the only laptops that Apple offers with mini-LED panels which Apple labels ‘Liquid Retina XDR’. mini-LED and OLED are two alternatives. Both have their pros and cons.

There have been rumors that Apple is developing a 15-inch MacBook Air, according to a recent article. According to this source, Apple is also working on a 12-inch MacBook. TSMC is scheduled to begin scale production of Apple's M2 Pro and M2 Max chips later this year, and new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros might be released as early as next year.
