Chinese short-video making app TikTok is testing the ability for its users to upload 15-minute long videos, in an effort to compete with YouTube. Social media consultant Matt Navarra shared a screenshot of a message shown to users who have access to the new feature.

According to the provided screenshot, users have the ability to upload longer videos to the platform using either the TikTok app or the desktop version. TikTok has confirmed that they are currently testing this new upload limit in specific regions with a limited number of users.

In February 2022, the social media platform increased its maximum video length from three minutes to 10 minutes. This expanded video length will provide creators with additional time and greater flexibility to express their creativity.

The current practice for creators on TikTok is to direct viewers to a "Part 2" video if the original video exceeds 10 minutes. However, with the recent extension of the time limit, creators may no longer need to produce an entire video series to share their content. This change positions TikTok in direct competition with YouTube, as the platform seeks to attract longer-form video creators who typically post on YouTube.

Previously, TikTok was known for short-form content, while YouTube was associated with long-form content. However, the lines between the two platforms have become increasingly blurred in recent years, with TikTok embracing longer videos and YouTube adopting shorter videos through its Shorts feature.

In the third quarter of 2023, TikTok recorded approximately 272.7 million global user downloads. Initially launched in China by ByteDance as Douyin, the short-video format gained widespread popularity through TikTok and subsequently dominated the global social media landscape in 2020. Currently, TikTok boasts a staggering user base of over 1 billion individuals worldwide.
