Dubai Press Club, in partnership with Murdoch University, and the support of DP World, yesterday organised the first session of the ‘Advanced Economic Journalism’ training programme, which aims to introduce journalists to best practices in financial markets locally and globally. The programme aims to build the skills of business journalists and improve the quality of business reporting.
On this occasion, Director of Dubai Press Club Maitha Buhumaid highlighted the importance of maintaining high professional standards in business reporting and ensuring the accuracy of business news. She also said that DPC has launched the programme to equip journalists with the skills required to cover business-related events, and write in-depth news stories and analysis using simple language while maintaining high journalistic standards.
Dr. James Trotter, Dean and Academic President, Murdoch University Dubai, said: "We are pleased to contribute to this wonderful initiative of the Dubai Press Club to help business journalists gain a deeper understanding of the latest economic and financial trends through these unique workshops. We are happy to team up with DPC as an educational partner and are committed to working hand in hand with them to support DPC and the media industry."
During the session, Dr. Manoaj Kandharri, Assistant Professor, Finance, Murdoch University, said that journalists should be proficient in reading graphs to analyse complex economic and financial data. Based on an analysis of the data, they should be able to write clear and concise news stories that can be understood easily by the audience.
He also said that journalists should have a clear sense of what makes news in financial and trade markets, and be able to write interesting stories especially on new trends and events shaping the business and global economic landscape.
Dr. Kandharri commended the programme and the initiative that DPC has taken to develop it. He said the programme contributes to the strategy of the UAE to develop highly-skilled talent for the future.
