However, some of these trends have shocked medical professionals, who have urged TikTok users not to try them for the risk of permanent damage. The most recent one is the calamine lotion make-up fad, which has the potential to induce serious reactions and skin damage.

Some TikTokers, especially those with oily skin, have been using the medicine as a primer. They apply calamine on their faces before applying foundation to provide a base for their makeup as it is said to absorb excess grease.

In an interview with Daily Mail, dermatologist Dr Alia Ahmed at Frimley and Barts Health NHS Trusts said leaving calamine lotion on areas like the face for prolonged periods, either under or as makeup, can lead to excessive skin dryness, seen as scaly or flaky patches with redness.

She added calamine draws “moisture out of the skin" and "exfoliates." Over-exfoliation, on the other hand, can lead to serious issues such as "rashes and irritation, and ultimately could cause damage to the skin barrier."
