Many of us will be wondering about the fate of our social media accounts once we go from this world eternally. Can our loved ones keep our accounts safely in memory of us? You 'll be really surprised to know that the answer to this question is yes. Social media has become an inevitable part of our lives and we cant even think about a life without social media. The number of its users are increasing day by day. Some are really addicted to its use and interestingly spend too much time on it. So naturally, it’s going to be interesting to know the fate of your accounts after you pass away from this world.
Facebook has an option to appoint a person to take care of your account after you die. The Legacy Contact section can be found by clicking the arrow at the top right, then going to Settings, General, Manage Account and legacy Contact. Your chosen legacy contact will be able to pin posts on your timeline, update your profile picture, request to have your account removed and respond to friend requests. However, they won’t be able to post anything, remove/add friends, change past posts on your timeline or view your inbox messages.
When choosing your legacy contact, you also have the option to allow them to download a copy of what you shared on Facebook. This includes timeline posts, shared posts, videos and the About section, but it doesn’t include your messages. You also have the option to memorialize your account. The word ‘Remembering’ will appear just before your name to signify that your account has been memorialized. No one will be able to login to this account, but people may still post on your timeline from their own accounts to write tributes and share posts. If you are not interested in this option your account will have the option to get deleted also. It all depends on your priority.
But so far Twitter doesn’t have an option like Facebook and once you die your account will get deactivated upon request.
Instagram also offers the option to memorialize your account by your loved ones. Once memorialized, your account can’t be changed - this includes followers, likes, tags, posts, and comments. Your posts are only visible to your chosen audience. Your relatives have the right to request for a deactivation of your account.
It’s your will and wishes to decide the fate of your social media accounts once you leave this world forever. You can give the details to a close person and authorize to handle your accounts after your death as per your wish. Sometimes they may wish to feel your presence through your social media accounts. So plan well in advance before you leave this world. Decide what you would like to do with your social media accounts. Whether to keep it or deactivate it. It’s your choice.
