Medical City is a significant addition to Abu Dhabi’s healthcare ecosystem

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council, His Highness Sheikh Khaled Bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has approved the establishment of a specialised medical city for women and children.

The medical city which will be dedicated to women’s and children’s health will include Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for paediatric care. The medical city will also house the Corniche Hospital for women and newborns’ health, a rehabilitation facility, as well as a mental health centre.

According to The National News, on Thursday, January 11, 2024, Sheikh Khaled visited the new site and said the plans represent a significant addition to the healthcare ecosystem in Abu Dhabi and enhance the emirate’s healthcare infrastructure.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince has also given directives to develop high-quality and specialised facilities that will continue to meet the community’s current and future healthcare needs as part of an integrated and preventive healthcare system.

The centre of excellence will have more than 200 doctors on hand to deliver exceptional care to patients. The CoE will also provide 29 specialities including oncology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, liver, kidney and bowel transplantation, cardiac medicine, and gastroenterology.

The centre of excellence will also have a capacity of 250 beds. This includes 10 beds for mental health services and 100 beds for long-term paediatric care. The centre will also work to advance research and innovation in children’s health and develop modern treatments.

Sheikh Khaled also approved plans to transfer the Corniche Hospital facilities to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City. The relocated hospital is scheduled to open in 2027 and will offer 205 beds, with 90 beds dedicated to children and 15 beds for maternity wards.

The medical city will also house the Salma Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital and a centre for women and children’s mental health.
