Twitter followed up its expansion of the character limit for tweets to 280 characters last week by upping another character limit.

The social network announced in a Twitter Support tweet that users’ display names can now run up to 50 characters in length.

User names are still limited to 15 characters, and Twitter explained in a support post that user names appear in users’ profile URLs and are unique to them, and they are used to login, reply to tweets and send direct messages, while display names appear on users’ profile pages and are used to identify users, particularly in cases where user names differ from the actual names of people or businesses.

The social network also pointed out that changing user names will not affect existing followers, DMs or replies, suggesting that users who choose to change their user names let their followers know beforehand.
