Mashable: Apple is currently dedicating significant efforts to a new endeavor: the development of touch-screen Macbooks. If successful, this would mark the first instance of Apple incorporating touch screens into their Mac computers.

Which is why a MacBook Pro with a touch screen is next. This is why Apple has gone extra hard on awesome displays even though their current lineup had great displays. — Savitar Jagtiani (@jagthesav) May 16, 2024

According to a report from Bloomberg, individuals familiar with this project suggest that it reflects Apple's genuine consideration of this concept. However, it is important to note that these plans are not yet finalized and are subject to potential changes.

For an extended period, Apple maintained that touch screens are not suitable for laptops. They have consistently recommended using an iPad for a touch interface, especially now that the newly released iPads are equipped with the powerful M2 and M4 chips, comparable to Macbooks. Concerns were also raised about touch-screen Macs potentially impacting iPad sales.

However, other companies such as Asus, HP, and Dell have started incorporating touch screens into their computers, prompting Apple to consider doing the same.

In recent years, Mac computers have gained more popularity and generated more revenue for Apple than iPads. Therefore, Apple is keen on ensuring that their computers remain top-notch.

As per Mark Gurman, Apple may introduce their first touch-screen Mac in 2025, possibly as part of a significant update to the MacBook Pro. However, the individuals involved wish to remain anonymous due to the confidential nature of the plans.

At this point apple won't make a Mac with a touch screen. If they somehow make ios 18 closer to Mac OS, I'll be shocked. I got the iPad instead of the MacBook because I wanted the touch screen and didn't really care if it can't do everything a MacBook can with the OS. — Super Nicktendo  (@SNicktendo) May 15, 2024

The upcoming touch-screen MacBook Pro will maintain the appearance of a traditional laptop, complete with a trackpad and keyboard. However, the display will possess the capability to detect touch and gestures, similar to the functionality found on an iPhone or iPad. In the future, Apple could potentially introduce touch support to additional Mac models as well.
