Mashable: The new tool enables Apple to distribute security patches that do not necessitate a complete operating system update.

Apple has released its first-ever Rapid Security Response (RSR) update, designed to resolve security vulnerabilities in its popular operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. The new tool enables Apple to distribute security patches that do not necessitate a complete operating system update.

The available updates include iOS/iPadOS 16.4.1(a) and MacOS 13.3.1(a), which can be downloaded through the standard update process. They include security updates for zero-day vulnerabilities and other vulnerabilities. The smaller size of the update, for example, a few MBs, makes installation fast and simple rather than downloading a huge GB of files.

In the past, security patches were included in larger operating system updates, delaying the deployment of security improvements. With RSR, security updates are separated from operating system updates and can be automatically deployed over the air without the need to wait for a complete OS update.

Apple has linked to a notification that verifies the update is available, but the release details don't specify which vulnerabilities were fixed.

How do you install it?

To install an RSR update, users can follow the same process used to install traditional software updates. On an iPhone or iPad, users will need to open the Settings app and go to General > Software update. On a Mac, users will need to open the System Settings app, click General, and then click Software Update.

Once the update is downloaded and installed, the device will reboot and return to its normal state. Without the need for a complete operating system update, Apple can now resolve security issues in a more timely and efficient manner with RSR updates.

The release of the RSR update highlights Apple's ongoing commitment to security, as it continues to address potential security risks for its popular operating systems. As always, Apple encourages all users to keep their devices up to date with the latest security updates to ensure the safety and security of their devices and personal information.
