Mashable: This might keep the headset from being too hot and make it more manageable for extended periods of wear.

Apple's much-anticipated mixed-reality headset, speculated to be titled "Reality Pro" or "Reality One," is slated to be presented at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has shared new facts (via PCMag) about the wearable's external battery.

Gurman announced the headset's external power supply in a recent issue of his Power On newsletter; Apple took this decision in response to user complaints about the headset being too hot and in an effort to make the headset more manageable for extended periods of wear.

Gurman said that the external battery pack, which will be around the size of an iPhone, will provide about two hours of battery life, so players will need to plug in the power pack while playing in order to extend their sessions. Gurman predicts that Apple will allow customers to purchase additional packs and that the pack itself can be recharged using a USB-C connection attached to a MacBook Pro power adapter.

The power pack will have two ports—a USB-C interface for data transfers and a "new proprietary charging connector" that, according to Gurman, is evocative of Apple's recently reintroduced MagSafe power adapter. It has been said that the bundled power cord has a round tip that magnetically attaches to Apple's headset and that users will have to rotate the wire and lock it in place to keep it from falling out.

Gurman's article highlights the fact that Apple's headset will be a first-generation device, with a clumsy power delivery system and a speculated price tag of $3,000 making it doubtful that the typical consumer will hurry to buy the latest technology. It's also said to have a dozen sensors and cameras to detect eye movement and hand gestures, run on an Apple's M2 chip, and feature two 4K displays (one for each eye).

Despite the challenges, the tech giant hopes that the mixed-reality headset will be a huge success, marking its foray into a new product category and opening the way for further innovations in AR and VR.

What other announcements Apple has planned for WWDC is yet unknown. But Gurman's recent research offers a tantalizing taste of what's to come for those waiting for the arrival of the mixed-reality headset.
