It's a shade of grey that's a little darker than your average dark grey, but not quite as dark as a complete black.
Over the past few years, the dark mode has become increasingly popular. A dark mode has been added to most of the apps we use on a daily basis, and it's already a given in most Google apps, including Search. On the desktop web version last week, the company experiment with a pitch-black theme for search results. Google is now testing a darker shade for its Android app, which is now available in the beta version.
According to 9to5Google, Google is testing out an Android search app with a darker, more secluded dark mode. It's a shade of grey that's a little darker than your average dark grey, but not quite as dark as a complete black.
The new dark mode in Google's mobile app may be more appealing to devices with OLED displays that want to save battery life or who simply prefer dark mode. The beta version (13.8) of the app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store by signing up for the official beta test group or as an application package(apk file) from APKMirror for sideloading. APKMirror is an archive that allows Android users to download items not readily available on their devices.
9to5Google says the background of Google Discover is the primary focus of this change. The dark theme is now closer to black (#171717) than light grey (#202124), with everything, especially the Google logo, standing out more. No changes have been made to the light grey bar at the bottom of the pill-shaped search field.
Google Search is getting a darker look, but it's not clear if this is a company-wide directive or just an internal change to the dark theme.
