Mashable: Timeline feature is designed to assist users in recollecting the locations they have previously visited.
Google has unveiled a novel addition to Maps known as the 'Timeline' feature, designed to assist users in recollecting the locations they have previously visited. In the near future, this Timeline will be securely stored on your device, granting you enhanced authority over your personal data. This remarkable attribute is made possible through the implementation of a feature called Location History.
In a recent blogpost, the tech giant assured users that in the event of acquiring a new phone or concerns about potential loss of their current device, they have the option to securely store their data on the Cloud.
By opting for this backup solution, users can prevent any data loss. Furthermore, Google emphasized that they take the privacy and security of users' information seriously by automatically encrypting the backed-up data, ensuring that it remains unreadable to anyone, including Google.
Furthermore, it should be noted that upon activating Location History for the first time, the company has specified that the auto-delete control will be initially configured to three months as the default setting. This implies that any data exceeding this time frame will be automatically erased.
Previously, the default setting for this option was set at 18 months. However, individuals who wish to preserve their memories on their Timeline for a longer duration can opt to extend the time period or disable the auto-delete controls entirely.
Google has announced that these updates will be implemented gradually over the next year on Android and iOS. Users will be notified when the update is available for their account.
Additionally, Google mentioned that the blue dot on Google Maps now provides convenient location controls. By simply tapping on it, users can easily check if their Location History or Timeline settings are enabled and if Maps has access to their device's location.
The introduction of fresh blue dot controls will commence in the upcoming weeks on Android and iOS platforms
