Mashable: Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez secured third place.
Max Verstappen showcased his dominance yet again, solidifying his quest for a third consecutive Formula One world title with an emphatic triumph at the Austrian Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver's victory marked his fifth consecutive win and seventh out of nine races this season, extending his championship lead over teammate Sergio Perez to a staggering 81 points.
Throughout the race, Verstappen exhibited absolute dominance, consistently thwarting his competitors' attempts to challenge his lead. Despite his team's initial reluctance, the 25-year-old Dutchman managed to convince them to allow him to pit two laps from the finish, pursuing the fastest lap and ultimately securing an extra championship point on the final lap. This flawless performance complemented his triumph in the sprint race on Saturday, making it a perfect weekend for Verstappen.
With this victory, Verstappen achieved a remarkable milestone, claiming his 42nd F1 win overall. This achievement catapulted him ahead of the late legendary Ayrton Senna, firmly establishing himself as the fifth driver in F1's illustrious history to achieve such a feat.
Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc, last year's winner at the Austrian Grand Prix, settled for second place, finishing 5.2 seconds behind the Red Bull driver. Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez secured third place, trailing 17.2 seconds behind the leader. Despite Verstappen's late pit stop, his winning margin remained significant, cementing his supremacy on the track.
Other notable drivers faced penalties during the race, including Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr., who both received five-second time penalties for exceeding track limits.
Sergio Perez's remarkable performance was not to be overlooked, starting from 15th position and securing a podium finish with a thrilling pass on Carlos Sainz Jr. with ten laps to go. Sainz crossed the line in fourth place, followed by Lando Norris of McLaren in fifth, and Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin in sixth. Hamilton, who endured a challenging race, finished seventh, while his teammate George Russell secured the eighth position.
The entire grid paid tribute to the late Dilano van 't Hoff, a promising 18-year-old Dutch driver who tragically lost his life in a crash at the Formula Regional European Championship in Belgium. As the racing community mourned his passing, drivers observed a minute of silence in his memory. With the F1 calendar moving forward, all eyes are now on the forthcoming race in Belgium, slated for July 30.
