As the consequences of global warming are becoming increasingly visible year after year, measures to cut down emissions have become a priority for governments. Authorities in the UAE, along with innovators behind digital tools, are offering incentives which seek to make buying and handling electric vehicles easier for motorists.

While road transport authorities in Dubai are offering free parking for EVs till 2022, apps are connecting e-car owners as a community to create a trend. Driven by the urgency to achieve electrification of Emirati roads on the path towards the future, Dubai's power authority has rolled out QR codes for quick access to charging stations.

Electric vehicle owners in the smart city will be eligible to use the feature as soon as their ride is registered with the RTA, that is collaborating with DEWA on this project. Motorists can then scan the codes for accessing 300 green charging points set up across Dubai, and charge cars for free.

The move comes after the local power body announced that EV owners will get no-cost charging as an incentive till December this year. The strong network of charging stations assembled today, started off with the establishment of 100 such units in the city back in 2015.

These points are also connected to a system, which points drivers towards the nearest green charger, through DEWA's website or its app. Although smart cards will also be delivered to users for powering up their wagons, the QR code enables owners to start and end charging in a touch-free manner.

In addition to these features, ultra-fast as well as mobile and inductive tech are also being explored to make the service more convenient, with a view to enhance EV ownership.

As RTA supports this initiative by DEWA, it also has its own plans for complete electrification of Dubai's taxi fleet by 2027. The projects are in line with the goal to significantly increase presence of hybrid and fully electric cars on the city's roads by the end of this decade.
