It’s one of the most widely-used browsers in the world, but it seems that Google Chrome may not be as safe as you think it is.
A series of hoax links have appeared in the Google Chrome Store - the online store where users can download apps and extensions for the browser.
The fake links appear to be for ‘free movies’, including Black Panther , Rampage and Avengers: Infinity War , according to TorrentFreak , who first flagged the issue.
When you click on one of the links, it takes you to what looks like a page where you can watch the movie online in ‘Full HD Online 4K.’
But the page is in actual fact a scam, and redirects you to a platform called vioos.co.
And as soon as you click on the play button, it redirects you again, to another platform called Zumastar, which asks you to create a ‘free account’ to access ‘unlimited downloads & streaming.’
Whatever you do - don’t create an account.
TorrentFreak said: “We didn’t follow through with a sign-up but further searches revealed upset former customers complaining of money being taken from their credit cards when they didn’t expect that to happen.”
The numbers of people who have been fooled by the scam remains unclear, although when TorrentFreak wrote about it on Sunday, it found that the link to the fake Rampage movie had 2,196 users, while the fake Black Panther movie had more than 1,800.
TorrentFreak added: “Clearly, a worrying number of people will click and install just about anything.
“As a rule of thumb, it’s nearly always wise to steer clear of anything with “full movie” in the title, they can rarely be trusted.”
