UAE: Ramadan 2024 dates and fasting duration revealed; 6-day break for Eid Al Fitr

Mashable: Potential dates for Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr 2024 have been revealed

The Islamic month of Ramadan 2024 is reportedly just 90 days away for observing Muslims in the United Arab Emirates.

Ramadan is considered the holiest month in Islam and sees Muslims fasting from dawn to dusk for a whole month. During the holy month as the spiritual atmosphere prevails, life slows down in the Gulf and other Muslim countries with several regions giving people leeway of reduced office hours.

 

Ramadan 2024

According to the Khaleej Times, the website of the Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD), published the Hijri or Islamic calendar for next year, stating that Ramadan 2024 will begin on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. The holy month is expected to have 29 days in 2024, with the last fasting day falling on Tuesday, April 9, 2023.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri or Islamic calendar. All months in the Hijri calendar are determined by the spotting of the crescent moon. Although actual dates might differ as per moon sightings and are officially announced by the authorities, the predictions as per astronomical calculations are mostly accurate.

Fasting duration

The fasting hours during Ramadan 2024 will be shorter as compared to Ramadan 2023. The first day of the holy month next year will reportedly see Muslims abstaining from eating and drinking for 13 hours and 16 minutes, whereas, by the end of the month, the fasting hours will reportedly reach almost 14 hours.

This year, the UAE residents observed fasting for hours ranging between 13 hours and 33 minutes to 14 hours and 16 minutes.

Eid Al Fitr 2024

The Islamic festival of Eid Al Fitr is celebrated after the fasting month. Next year, the festival is expected to offer the longest official break for UAE residents.The UAE government has reportedly specified a public holiday to be given from Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3. So, as per the Gregorian calendar, the residents will get a holiday from Tuesday, April 9, 2024, till Friday, April 12. 2024. A Saturday-Sunday weekend will make this a six-day break.
