WhatsApp groups and social media pages have been buzzing with this new development
The expat community in UAE is elated as they can now connect with their families back home instantly with WhatsApp.
Video and voice calls on the instant messaging service WhatsApp were blocked in the country as it is a VoIP serivce. But messages on WhatsApp groups and social media platforms hinted that the calls have started working since Thursday morning.
We tested calling on WhatsApp and it worked on both, WiFi connection and mobile data.
Free calling apps to remain blocked in UAE
We are yet to get any confirmation from the authorities on the new development. However, it must be noted that VoIP services, including video-calling, were restricted in the UAE, with the TRA allowing only licensed providers to offer such services.
According to the UAE's Telecom Regulatory Authority, "VoIP services are still a prerogative of the licensed providers who reserve the right to provide such services through their networks. Companies wishing to offer such services must co-ordinate with the licensed telecom providers in the UAE."
