The Journal News

Owned by Gannett, Inc., The Journal News has a long and distinguished history of service to the residents and businesses in New York’s Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties. The company evolved from daily and weekly newspapers, the oldest of which traces its start to 1829.

For over 130 years, these local newspapers formed, merged, and reorganized under various owners until 1964, when Gannett Co. Inc., acquired them. The Gannett Co. Inc., was founded by Frank E. Gannett in 1906, incorporated in 1923 and brought public in 1967.

On May 21, 1973, The Gannett Westchester Rockland Newspaper Group established headquarters at One Gannett Drive, Harrison. It was at this location that all of the Westchester mastheads were printed. The location also served as a print site for USA Today.

The acquisition of the Westchester and Rockland newspapers from the Macy group helped establish a base of ten dailies: Herald Statesman, Daily Argus, Standard Star, Reporter Dispatch, Daily Times, Daily News, Citizen Register, Daily Item, Rockland Journal News, and the Putnam Reporter Dispatch. The last two papers, the Bronxville Review and Peekskill Star came on board by 1985.

In 1989, Gannett completed expansion of its facilities to include a third line of presses giving the capability of printing three different newspapers at once. Today, it boasts a state-of-the-art operation with its Harrison presses. Local editorial offices provide communities with dedicated news and circulation staffs; advertising covers all of our geographical areas.

In October of 1998, Gannett combined its various mastheads to offer a single, more comprehensive newspaper called The Journal News. The paper publishes four editions offering readers complete local and county news every day.

Present day: The Journal News continues to strengthen its position as media leader in the Lower Hudson Valley. Our high-traffic web site, LoHud.com, is continuously refined and updated to serve visitor needs. We also continue to expand our reader audience through our growing number of Custom Publishing products, including the highly successful Rockland Magazine, niche products and a host of specialty publications.
