When the Royal Dutch Automobile Club was established in 1898, the word "car" was still unknown. There was talk of automobiles. Rare variety lines on the road, where driving was a whole experience. The car at the time was mostly like an open carriage with an engine. The top speed was about 25 km per hour. In the Netherlands there were plenty of discussions about which warning signal the cars had to be equipped with. A bell? Or did the vehicle have to be preceded by a man with a flag?
